Quitting smoking is as much about the little thing as it is about the big stuff. Whilst it takes a lot of willpower to quit it tends to be the little things that chip away at you, causing you to quit, or a culmination of many small factors that come together to help you succeed.

Which is why it is important to get advice from people who have managed to quit, and learn from them what tips they used to help them break their own habits.

5 Tips To Help Ensure You Actually Quit Smoking

1. Partner up. There are many smokers who want to quit – and working together you can help to get each other through the tough times, if only by having someone to talk to who understands. Knowing someone else is going through it as well can be great motivation – as can not wanting to let them down!

2. Announce it to everyone. No one wants to be made to look stupid in public. So tell anyone and everyone who will listen that you have given up smoking for good. You then feel that you have to go through with it, and not being made to look daft can help convince you not to try that sneaky one when you are feeling you really need it!

3. Use quitting aids. Many people don't like to use patches and gum because they feel it seems weak, they should be able to do it by themselves. If help is there, use it. No one will think less of you!

4. Drink lots of water. This helps to flush the chemicals out of your system and it helps fight the 'oral fixation' that many people who give up smoking suffer from.

5. Write down why you are doing it. Is it because you want to be healthier? Live longer for your kids? Get it on paper and remind yourself when you feel yourself slipping!
