Gum: Healthy?
Did you know that chewing gum could be a benefit to your health? Well it’s true. Most people, mostly parents, teachers, and dentists are against kids chewing gum constantly. Studies show that Americans eat 1.8 POUNDS of gum each year! Other studies show that chewing gum after eating a meal can “clean” your mouth. This also can stimulate saliva, or spit, by washing away bacteria that can damage our teeth. This can easily clean out your mouth and freshen it up. This doesn’t mean that cavities still can’t occur.
Research proves that good oral health decreases the risk of heart disease, diabetes, and other serious diseases. An experiment’s conclusion states that chewing gum can “boost” the amount of blood to the brain, by an entire 40%! In the United Kingdom, tests were taken by giving the participant’s a list of words. Once with gum, once without. The results were that people had 25% sharper memory of the words than the other groups of people without gum. Studies show that chewing a stick of gum, or a gumball that has medicine, is better than a pill or liquid, three times better! Researchers found that 40% of the medicine flowed directly through the cheeks of the patient.
Scientists have created a gum to keep people alert and awake. Each piece of gum has the same amount of caffeine as a cup of coffee! And it only takes a few minutes to “kick in.” This product was mainly made for the military to keep the soldiers awake, for up to 72 hours! This may all sound just great, but too much chewing, can lead to jaw joint problems. Or even chewing too much gum with vitamins or medicines, could lead to overdose. Think about that next time you are chewing gum for hours on end.
